The French government has declared wide range of initiatives intending to attract more number of tourists, ranging from initiation of fast-track visas for Indian visitors to granting Sunday shop openings in particular areas of tourism. Laurent Fabius, Foreign Minister, said that France intends to attract 100 million tourists with 83 million foreign tourists in 2012. Earlier in January 2014, Chinese visitors were introduced with a 48-hour visa which would be now extended to India, South Africa and Gulf countries in near future. Gare du Nord station in Paris is an arrival point for trains from Amsterdam, Brussels and London. So, plans to upgrade the station are also under consideration. Fabius promised to tackle the problem of pickpockets by increasing the police force at major tourist areas by 20%. Government has plans to initiate fixed airport fare for Paris taxis and speed up the plans for high speed trains connecting the airport and the city. Tourism sector accounts for seven percent of gross domestic product and hires two million people, according to statistics provided by the government.
